Voter Antipathy

In the City’s first election, back in 1886, 499 men turned up at the polling stations. At the time, women had not been granted the franchise, and, according to the recollection of one city pioneer, anyone of Asian descent who attempted to approach the polling station was chased off by an angry mob.
