The Wild McCleerys

Year the “first” permanent dwelling was built in Vancouver: 1873

Though archeological data indicates that the area was home to West Coast First Nations people for at least 2000 years, the McCleery farm, built by homesteaders Fitzgerald and Sam McCleery in what is now Kerrisdale, is reported to be the first permanent dwelling built by Europeans in Vancouver. The McCleerys, who arrived in 1863, built what was also the area’s first operating farm ten years later. The land is now part of the McCleery Golf Course.
