According to information obtained by The Tyee, the B.C. Coroner’s office has recorded 54 Skytrain-related deaths since the rapid-transit line opened in 1985. Incidents of human contact with a train car (identified by the phrase “Red India” on attendant radios) occur at a rate of 2.5 per year – including 2 in the same month: January, 2008. Of that total, 10 were accidental and the remainder were suicides.
Adding barriers to all Skytrain stations has been dismissed by Translink, owing to the $40 million price tag.
