Maximum number of hens permitted in Vancouver backyards: 4

According to city animal control and zoning bylaws, no more than four hens are permitted in any residential yard within city limits. With this recent amendment, Vancouver joins the ranks of other such fowl-friendly Lower Mainland cities as Surrey and New Westminster, and such international destinations as New York, Chicago and Portland.

However, City Council regulations are careful to note that while “female chickens four months of age or older” are permitted, roosters, or any other farm animals, are strictly forbidden. Residents are also barred from selling any eggs produced or slaughtering the chickens, which must instead be euthanized by a licensed veterinarian.
