According to BC Statistics, 4,686 consumer bankruptcies were filed in Metro Vancouver in 2009.

Figures in the region have been steadily rising since 1988, with 2009 being the highest yet recorded. Business bankruptcies, on the other hand, were the second-lowest in 20 years.
